ABOUT

  • ranch-style 90's home in typical residential neighborhood owned by widow who is a fervent gardener; existing decks, patio, & concrete paths to remain

  • phase one was the removal of all of the front lawn with phase two continuing the next year including removal of that lawn, too

  • older owner wanted a garden that would be fun for her to garden, but not difficult to maintain

  • property is relatively flat, with a slope down to the street at the front

  • keen on roses, the owner wanted plenty of them including some to save and reuse. There were a few other plants to also relocate and reuse

PROJECT

  • create a garden with lots of roses, but don't create your typical rose garden

  • introduce other plants to help set off the roses, add multi-season interest, and be fairly drought-tolerant

  • new structures needed to respect the existing home style

  • add screening in the back for privacy

  • make sure there is plenty of colorful flowers in the summer

  • create a direct new path from the sidewalk to the concrete walk to the front door.

DESIGN CONCEPTS

  • make a big splash with roses while creating some quiet space for them to play off of other plants

  • add other perennials to bring more summer color

  • give the design a little formality to organize a loose group of lavender, Russian sage, juniper, thyme, heather, hardy geranium, Coreopsis, and more

  • create some simple trellises to help with privacy and better support the tallest roses and vines in the back

  • provide interest each season viewable through windows and at the curb
