Pacific NW Native: Iris tenax

"Vanessa Gardner Nagel ‘s seminar on ‘Understanding Basic Design Principles’ at the 2010 Northwest Flower & Garden Show received rave reviews from the audience. Using humor and a relaxed manner, she discussed the principles of garden design in a well-organized fashion that both beginners and more experienced gardeners could grasp. Her images reinforced the concepts perfectly. “She’s an excellent teacher, and she will likely write a good book” wrote one audience reviewer. “She was great - have her back!” said another. She will definitely be returning as a garden show speaker next year!."

Planning: Outdoor Fabric Workshop, Spring 2016

PAST WORKSHOPS

Creating Landscape Design Installation Documents

What you will learn:

  • The essential drawings to describe your project and what makes it easier for contractors
  • The conventions surrounding a set of installation documents (i.e. the order of a set, notes, and more)
  • Why it's even more important when the project is bid
  • Navigating liability, legal jargon, and plans versus 'waving your arms' on site
  • Beyond the master plan, planting plan & plant list: how to create a cover sheet, hardscape plan, lighting plan and furnishings plan and learn why they are important.
  • Learn the approach to drawing enlarged or partial plans, elevations, and details.

About the instructor:
Before Vanessa became an APLD-certified landscape designer, Vanessa's previous career as a commercial interior designer meant that most of the time she was working with architects. During that over 20-year period she learned the importance of assembling a 'tight' set of drawings for a project. During her last position for a multi-national architecture and engineering firm (now under the umbrella of its parent company, CH2M Hill), part of the job entailed taking insurance exams to qualify for a greater liability insurance discount. Vanessa is also the author of 'Understanding Garden Design' and 'The Professional Designer's Guide to Garden Furnishings', published by Timber Press, and a well-known garden design speaker in the Pacific Northwest.

Vanessa will have sample drawing sets available, as well as a PowerPoint presentation that will take you step-by-step through the process.
